Introduction of Vincennes
City in SW Indiana, on the Wabash River, 57 mi S ofTerre Haute. The oldest town in Indiana, it wassettled in 1702 and became the most important centerof the Northwest Frontier. It was ceded by the Frenchto the British in 1763 but remained virtually self-governinguntil the American Revolution. From 1800 to1813 it was the capital of Indiana Territory.
