Established in1336, it was the capital of the Hindu empire of Vijayanagarafrom the 14th century until 1565, when itwas sacked and the empire destroyed following theMuslims' victory over the Hindus at Talikota. At itspeak, under Krishnadeva Raya from 1509 to 1529, itwas a vast and flourishing city that traded with manyEuropean and Asian countries.
