Introduction of Vicenza
City and capital of Vicenza province, 40 mi W ofVenice, in Veneto region. Originally a Gallic settlement,it was later a Roman city and was destroyedduring the barbarian invasions. In 1164 it joined theVeronese League against Frederick I Barbarossa. Itwas ruled by the della Scala of Verona from 1314 to1404, when it was annexed by Venice. The city passedto Austria in 1813 and was united to the kingdom ofItaly in 1866.
