Introduction of Utsunomiya
City, 60 mi N of Tokyo. Originating around a castle in the 11th century, it became a trading post in the Tokugawa period from 1603 to 1867 and a government center in 1884. It has the oldest Buddhist carvings in Japan in a ninth-century temple. Much 19th-century architecture is preserved here.
