City approximately 200 mi E of Ahmedabad. Inhabitedas early as the second millennium b.c., it wascapital of the Aryan kingdom of Avanti of the sixthto fourth centuries b.c. It was a center of Sanskritlearning and a great city that became very holy toHindus. It was a central city of Malwa from c. a.d.120 to 395. The legendary ruler Vikramaditya ruledhere c. 400. Destroyed by the Muslims in the 13thcentury, it was retaken by the Sindhias and made theircapital in the 15th century. It declined in the early19th century.
