Town and port in Dalmatia, opposite the island of Ciovo, on the Adriatic Sea, near Split. Colonized by Greeks from Syracuse c. 385 b.c., it was ruled successively by Byzantines, Croatians, Normans, Venetians, and Bosnians. It became part of Yugoslavia in 1920.
