Nearby is the ruinedabbey of Port-Royal-des-Champs, which was theheadquarters of the Jansenists in the 17th century.Founded in 1204, it was razed in 1710 and was thecenter of a strict reform movement within RomanCatholicism that sought to counter the influence ofCalvinism with its own brand of strict asceticism inbehavior and sexual mores. Though eventually disband ed,the members of Port Royal had a profoundinfluence, especially in Ireland and in Italy, wherethey were pioneers of the Enlightenment.
