Island in the S Malay Archipelago, between the Savuand Timor seas. The largest of the Lesser SundaIsland s, it was politically divided between PortugueseTimor to the E and Indonesian Timor to the W. IndonesianTimor, with the adjacent island s, formed theprovince of East Nusa Tenggara. The Portuguesebegan to trade with Timor in 1520, and the Dutcharrived in 1613. The island was divided by treatybetween the Netherland s and Portugal in 1860and 1914 along the present boundaries. In 1950 westernTimor became part of Indonesia, while the Eremained a Portuguese colony. In 1976 the latter wasseized in a civil war and also became part of Indonesia.Indonesian atrocities in suppressing the subsequentEast Timor revolt gained worldwide attentionand reportedly continued into the 1980s.
