Introduction of Tikal
Ancient Mayan city, in NW Peten department, NE of Peten Itza, N Guatemala. The biggest and perhaps the most ancient of the Mayan cities, it comprises nine sets of plazas and courts built on hills above the swampland , with bridges and causeways connecting the sets. It was an important ceremonial center between the first century a.d. and 300 and reached its height from 300 to 900, during the Classic period, when it began to decline and was all but aband oned.
