Introduction of Thuringia
Region of E Germany, now a state of Germany,around the Thuringian Forest, between the WerraRiver to the W and the Weisse Elster to the E, withits capital at Weimar. Vanquished by the Huns inthe fifth century a.d., the Thuringians were laterbriefly independent c. a.d. 500 with a kingdomstretching from the Harz Mountains to the DanubeRiver. Defeated by the Franks in 531 at Burgscheidungen,the Thuringian kingdom came underthe rule of the Frankish dukes and was converted toChristianity in the eighth century. A Magyar invasionof Thuringia was stopped at Riade in 933 byHenry I. In the 11th century the land graves ofThuringia became princes of the Holy RomanEmpire, and following a dynastic dispute the successionpassed to the house of Wettin in 1265.Thuringia, often associated with Saxony, wasdivided into smaller states in the 15th century and was only reunited in 1920 as a land , or state, of theWeimar Republic.
