Town in Moselle department, on the Moselle River,16 mi N of Metz, in Lorraine, NE France. One ofthe towns preferred by Charlemagne, it was here theemperor wrote the Testament of Thionville in a.d.806, which divided his kingdom among his heirs.Once part of the Holy Roman Empire, the townwas seized from Spain by Louis II of Bourbon, theGreat Conde, in 1643.
