Introduction of Tegucigalpa
City and capital of Honduras and of Francisco Morazan department, in the mountains of S central Honduras, 120 mi WNW of San Salvador. Founded in 1579 as a center of gold and silver mining, it became a Liberal stronghold following its independence from Spain in 1821 and was made the permanent capital of the republic in 1880. The city was severely damaged by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
