Introduction of Tarbes
City and capital of Hautes-Pyrenees department, on the Adour River, 23 mi ESE of Pau, SW France.Important under the Roman Empire, it became thecapital of the earldom of Bigorre in the 10th centuryand fell to the English during the Hundred Years'War of 1337 to 1453. During the Napoleonic Warsthe French were defeated near the city in 1814 by theBritish under the duke of Wellington.
