Visited by Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528,it was shunned by Europeans for 200 years becauseof Indian hostility and was only settled in 1823. Duringthe Civil War it was captured by Union forces inMay 1864, and in 1898 was the embarkation pointfor Colonel Theodore Roosevelt's Cuba-boundtroops.
