Introduction of Stobi
Ancient town of Paeonia dating from the sixth centuryb.c., now part of Macedonia, approximately 50mi SE of Skopje. An important center in ancientMacedonia, it became prominent in the RomanEmpire and in the Byzantine Empire until destroyedby an earthquake in a.d. 518 and not rebuilt. It wascapital of the Roman province of Macedonia. Itsruins, lying near modern Bitola, constitute one ofthe most important ancient sites in Macedonia.Extensive excavations have revealed a marble theater,streets, walls, a gate, baths, numerous once-richvillas, and several basilicas.
