Introduction of Solesmes
Village of the Sarthe department, on the Sarthe River,approximately 23 mi SW of Le Mans. It is the site ofthe well-known Benedictine abbey of St. Pierre deSolesmes, dating from 1010, which was a pilgrimagesite and which, in the late 19th century, led in therevival of the pure Gregorian chant, or plain song.The Solesmes chant was eventually adopted by theRoman Catholic Church as a whole.
