Introduction of Skyros
Largest of the N Sporades Island s, in the AegeanSea, off the coast of Thessaly. Prominent in Greeklegends of Theseus, the hero of Athens, it was conqueredin 476 b.c. by the Athenians under Cimon whoreturned the presumed bones of Theseus to Athens intriumph. Cimon also deported the inhabitants, soldthem into slavery and replaced them with Athenians.Skyros was taken by Philip of Macedon in 322b.c. and remained under Macedon until 196 b.c.,when the Romans took it from Philip V and restoredit to Athens. In a.d. 269 it was sacked by an army ofbarbarian Goths, Heruli, and Peucini. The WorldWar I English poet Rupert Brooke died and was buriedhere in 1915. The modern town of St. Georgeoccupies the site of the ancient town of Skyros.
