Introduction of Saint-Pierre
Town, on the island of Martinique, in the WestIndies, 11 mi NW of Fort-de-France. Establishedby French settlers under Esnambuc in 1635, it was athriving center of commercial activity until it wasburied under the volcanic eruption of Mount Peleein 1902, leaving one survivor out of 28,000 people.The ruins are visited by tourists today.
