Introduction of Saint-Louis
City and port in NW Senegal, West Africa, on anisland in the Senegal River. In 1638 the Frenchestablished a post at the mouth of the river and in1659 founded Saint-Louis on the island . It is the oldestFrench colonial settlement in Africa and was prosperousin slave-trading days. The British heldSaint-Louis from 1758 to 1759, during the SevenYears' War, and from 1809 to 1815 during the NapoleonicWars. When Senegal became a French colony in1895, Saint-Louis became its capital until 1902, whenSenegal was made part of French West Africa.
