Introduction of Saint-Dizier
Town of the Haut-Marne department, in the NE, on the Marne River, 39 mi N of Chaumont. It wasonce a Roman settlement. Besieged and taken in 1544during the interminable wars between the emperorCharles V and Francis I of France, it was also thescene of a battle in 1814, during the NapoleonicWars. St. Dizier's museum displays Roman and earlyChristian artifacts, and the town has many noteworthybuildings from the 15th to 18th centuries.
