Introduction of Sabah
State at the N tip of Borneo, on the South China Sea.The area was visited by the English as early as the 17thcentury. There were vain attempts at settlement untilSir James Brooke made a local arrangement in 1841.With the organization of the North Borneo Companyin 1881, the sultans of Brunei and Sulu made moreextensive concessions, until in 1888 the territory wasproclaimed a British protectorate. The company, however,administered it up to the beginning of World WarII, when it was occupied by the Japanese from 1941 to1945. It was made a British colony in 1946 and joinedthe Federation of Malaysia as a state in 1963, when ittook its present name.
