Town in South Yorkshire, at the confluence of theDon and Rother rivers, 6 mi NE of Sheffield. In thevicinity there are Bronze and Iron Age barrows, and at Templebrough there are traces of a Roman fort. Inthe middle of a bridge over the Don is a 15th-centurychantry chapel, now reconstructed. During the EnglishCivil War Royalists captured Rotherham in 1643,but after the battle of Marston Moor the town wassurrendered to the Parliamentarians.
