A papal cityin the eighth century a.d., it was taken by the GuelphMalatesta family in the 13th century and held until1509, when it came directly under the Papal States.It fell to Venice but was retaken in 1512. Rimini washeavily damaged in World War II. It has impressiveRoman remains and Renaissance buildings.Rimini was the home of Francesca da Rimini, thetragic lover recalled in Dante's Inferno.
