Introduction of Reykjavik
City, port, and capital of Iceland , on the SW coast. It was founded by Ingolfur Arnarson c. 870 and remained a village until the 18th century. Granted a charter in 1786, it became the headquarters of the Danish administration in 1801. Reykjavik was made the Iceland ic capital in 1918 and is the seat of the parliament (Althing) and of the Lutheran bishop. It was a vital Allied base in World War II.
