A Benedictine abbey wasfounded here in a.d. 724; and later in the MiddleAges Reichenau became an artistic, literary, and culturalcenter. Wall paintings dating from the 10th cen-tury in St. George's Church are the oldest in Germany.Charles III, the Fat, of France (839-88), emperor ofthe West as Charles II (881-87), is buried in thechurch of Mittelzell.
