Introduction of Port-Richmond
City, port of entry, and capital of the state of Virginia,on the James River. It was settled in 1637 and grew as a trading post around Fort Charles. Plannedin 1737, the city was the site of the second and thirdVirginia Conventions in 1775, during which PatrickHenry made his famous “Give me liberty or give medeath” speech. Richmond became the capital of Virginiain 1779 and was the Confederate capital duringthe Civil War, when it was a frequent target of theUnion forces. Captured in 1865 after the fightingaround Petersburg, it was burned during the Confederateretreat. The state capitol building of 1785was designed by Thomas Jefferson.
