Introduction of Port-Chester
Industrial suburb, village on Long Island Sound,25 mi NE of New York City, SE New York State.Settled c. 1660, it was known as Sawpit until 1837and was incorporated in 1868. General Israel Putnam,who lost several battles to the British in theHudson Highland s, made his headquarters here in1777-78 during the American Revolution. Somecolonial dwellings still stand here.
