Introduction of Ploiesti
Important petroleum-industry center, city in Walachia, 35 mi N of Bucharest, SE central Romania.
Founded in 1596 by a local prince, it bloomed into an important oil center in the 19th century. It was damaged by an earthquake in 1940. An important wartime source of German oil during World War II, it was damaged by heavy Allied bombing attacks in August 1943 and captured a year later by Soviet troops.
