Agricultural and commercial center, town, and capitalof Piacenza province, Emilia-Romagna region,on the Po River, 40 mi SE of Milan. It was foundedby the Romans in 218 b.c. as a defensive outpostagainst the Gauls. After its occupation in the earlyMiddle Ages by the Goths, Lombards, and Franks, itbecame part of the Lombard League in the 12th centurya.d. and witnessed peace negotiations betweenthe league and Frederick Barbarossa. It was controlledby the Visconti family beginning in 1337, the Sforzafamily, and the Papal States, beginning in 1512. In1545 it was given to the Farnese family as part of theduchy of Parma and Piacenza. It was the first city inItaly to join Piedmont, by plebiscite in 1848, and was incorporated in 1860 into a unified Italy.
