Manufacturing town, capital of Pavia province, Lombardyregion, 19 mi S of Milan, N Italy. It was animportant Roman municipality and , in the sixth centurya.d., the capital of the Lombards. Here werecrowned Charlemagne as king of Lombardy in 774,Berengar as king of Italy in 888, and Frederick I Barbarossaas king of Italy in 1155. The city was Ghibellinein the disputes between pope and emperor in the12th and 13th centuries.It fell to the Visconti in 1359 and flourished inthe following centuries under their rule. Its 15th-centurycathedral, 14th-century castle, monastery (Certosadi Pavia), and church were all built during thisera. At the Battle of Pavia in 1525 Holy RomanEmperor Charles V defeated Francis I of Francenearby during the Italian Wars, which ruined muchof the city.
