Introduction of Okinawa
An agricultural and resort island in the N Pacific Ocean, 350 mi SW of Kyushu, part of the Ryuku Island s chain. It was the scene of a successful but costly U.S. amphibious campaign, from April 1 to June 21, 1945, to establish air bases close to mainland Japan during World War II. One of the bloodiest campaigns of the war, it saw heavy damage done to the U.S. ships by suicide air attacks. The United States returned the island to Japan in 1972 but retains some military bases.
