Introduction of Mons
City and provincial capital, near the French border,in the SW at the junction of the Canal du Centre and the Conde-Mons canal. Built on the site of a Romancamp, the present town dates from the seventh centurya.d. It became the capital of Hainaut in 804. Invarious wars from the 16th to the 18th centuries itwas frequently contested by Dutch, Spanish, and French forces. In 1572 it was surrendered by Louis ofNassau during the Wars of Religion. In World War Ithe first engagement of the British ExpeditionaryForce took place here on August 23, 1914. It was alsothe scene of several other battles in both world wars.Historic buildings include the Gothic church of St.Waltrude dating from the mid-15th and 16th centuries,and a 15th-century town hall.
