Introduction of Modena
City and manufacturing center, in Reggio nell'Emiliaprovince, Emilia-Romagna region on the PanaroRiver approximately 22 mi NW of Bologna. Originallyan Etruscan city, Mutina became a Roman colonyin 183 b.c. Reconstructed by Constantine in thefourth century a.d., in 1288 it passed to the Este familyof Ferrara. With the duchy of Modena, establishedin 1452, it became the seat of the Este familyafter they lost Ferrara in 1598. During the NapoleonicWars it was taken by the French in 1796, wasmade part of the Cisalpine Republic of 1797, and became part of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in1805. In 1815 it passed to an Este descendant, FrancisIV, and became part of the kingdom of Italy in1860. Historic buildings include an 11th- and 12thcenturyRomanesque cathedral, the Palazzo dei Museiof 1753 to 1767, and a ducal palace dating from the17th century.
