Introduction of Macon
City of the SaС„ne-et-Loire department, located on theSaС„ne River, 42 mi N of Lyons. An important townof the Aedui in the first century b.c., it was againprominent as an episcopal see from the sixth centurya.d. until the Revolution. It suffered successively atthe hand s of the Germans, Burgundians, Vand als,Hungarians, and Carolingian kings. It was sold in1238 to the king of France; from 1435 to 1477 it wasBurgundian. A Huguenot stronghold in the 16th century,it fell into the hand s of the Catholic League and did not yield to Henry IV until 1594.
