Introduction of La-Rochelle
City, capital of the Charente-Maritime department,on the Bay of Biscay 75 mi SSE of Nantes. Theancient capital of Aunis and an important seaportand commune, La Rochelle was a Huguenot strongholdduring the Wars of Religion and was the centerof the Protestant revolt under the duc de Rohan, untilforced through famine to surrender to CardinalRichelieu in 1627-28. New Rochelle was foundedin America by Protestant refugees when the Edict ofNantes was revoked in 1685. La Rochelle prosperedas a trading center for Canada until France lost itscolonies in North America.
