Introduction of Houston
Port of entry and city in SE Texas, near the Gulf ofMexico. First settled in 1824, it was destroyed by theMexican general Santa Anna in 1836 during theTexas Revolution. It served as the capital of the TexasRepublic from 1837 to 1839 and from 1842 to1845. It grew spectacularly after the completion ofthe Houston Ship Canal in 1914, which made it adeepwater port. Discovery of oil in the area and adeveloping shipbuilding industry during World WarII increased its importance. The U.S. government'sManned Spacecraft center was established here in1961.
