Industrial city in NE New Jersey, on the HudsonRiver, opposite New York City. The Dutch purchasedit from the Indians in 1630, and PeterStuyvesant acquired it in 1658. John Stevens, whosehome was on Castle Point, laid out the town here in1804. In 1825, from his estate, he operated the firstlocomotive to pull a train in the United States. JohnJacob Astor lived here and attracted a literary crowdthat included Washington Irving.
