Manufacturing city in Lower Saxony, on the WeserRiver, 25 mi SW of Hanover. It was an ancientSaxon settlement, a missionary center c. 750, and amember of the Hanseatic League. It was given cityrights c. 1200, taken by Hanover in 1814, and byPrussia in 1866.
