Introduction of Greifswald
City in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 19 miSE of Stralsund, near the Baltic Sea. Founded in1240 by traders from the Netherland s, it was charteredin 1250, and in 1270 it joined the HanseaticLeague towns of Stralsund, Rostock, Wismar, and LСЊbeck and took part in the wars they carried onagainst the kings of Denmark and Norway. Duringthe Thirty Years' War it became a fortress for theHapsburgs and Catholic side, who vacated it in 1631to the Swedes, and it remained in their possessionafter the Peace of Westphalia. It was captured bythe Elector of Brand enburg in 1678 but was restoredto the Swedes the following year.
