City and capital of Denizli province, approximately112 mi SE of Izmir. An important center in the MiddleAges, in the 12th century a.d. it replaced ancientLaodicea ad Lycum, whose ruins are nearby. It wasfounded by Antiochus II (261-246 b.c.) of the SeleucidEmpire, and was the seat of one of the SevenChurches of Asia Minor of the New Testament.Hieropolis, just N of Laodicea, was also a center ofearly Christianity. Denizli was captured by the Turksof the Ottoman Empire in 1389.
