Introduction of Darjeeling
Town and hill station in Jalpaiguri division, West Bengal state, altitude 7,500 ft. Darjeeling was purchased in 1835 from the raja of Sikkim and was developed as a sanatorium for British troops. It was constituted a municipality in 1850, and has become noted for its incomparable mountain views, including that of Mt Everest, and for its tea. Now many Tibetan refugees live in the surrounding area.
