Builton the site of a Roman station, Cherbourg was foughtover in the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries by theFrench and English until it fell to France in 1450.Occupied by the Germans in World War II, it wasused as a naval base until captured by the Allies onJune 27, 1944.
