Introduction of Canakkale
Town and fortress on the Asiatic shore of the Dardanelles, 22 mi SW of Gallipoli in Canakkale province. The fortress was founded in the 15th century by the Ottoman Empire to guard the Dardanellles. During World War I it was unsuccessfully bombarded by the Allied fleet in March 1915 during the Gallipoli campaign. Traces of the ancient cities Abydos and Sestos are nearby.
