Introduction of Bayreuth
Capital city of Upper Franconia in Bavaria, 41 miNE of Nuremberg. Founded in 1194 by Bishop OttoII of Bamberg, it belonged to the Hohenzollerns from1248 until 1791, when it was taken by Prussia.Occupied by France during the Napoleonic Wars in1807, it passed to Bavaria in 1810, and becamefamous as the home of composer Richard Wagnerfrom 1872 until 1883. During his residence Wagnerdesigned the Festspielhaus, an opera house builtbetween 1872 and 1876 and known for its remarkableacoustical qualities.
