Introduction of Annapolis
City, port, and capital of Maryland , on ChesapeakeBay, 30 mi E of Washington, D.C. Foundedby Puritan refugees from Virginia in 1649, it was thescene of a session of the U.S. Congress from November26, 1783 to June 3, 1784. It was here that GeorgeWashington resigned as command er-in-chief of theContinental Army on December 23, 1783. The Treatyof Paris, ending the American War of Independence,was ratified here on January 14, 1784. The AnnapolisConvention, which opened the way to the 1787 FederalConstitutional Convention in Philadelphia,was held here in September 1786.
