Introduction of Amman
City and capital of Jordan, on the Jabbok River, 48mi ENE of Jerusalem. Occupied since prehistorictimes, it was the capital of the Ammonites from the13th to the sixth centuries b.c. During this time it wasengaged in a struggle with the Israelites that endedwhen King David captured the city c. 1010 b.c. It waslater captured by Ptolemy Philadelphus of Egypt whorebuilt the city between 285 and 246 b.c. In 63 b.c. itbecame a city of the Decapolis.
